An Estimated £2.25 Million was Gambled Away By These Machines in Swansea Alone Between 2011-2012
Since the relax in gambling laws made by Government in 2005 betting shops, pubs and casinos are allowed to have up to four of these machines in their premises. These machines allow users to play casino based games such as Roulette and Black Jack in a high stake bid. Machines like these allow a user to place £300 bets per minute which can result in a serious amount of money loss. In a recent survey conducted by myself within the community of young gamblers 62.5% of gamblers questioned admitted to using these machines to gamble. In data collected on Fixed Odd Betting Terminals across England and Wales by parliament in 2012 they estimated that nearly £2.25 million was lost by gamblers on these machines.

Salimah Musabbir-Turner leading gambling intervention worker in Swansea believes that these machines ‘attract young people with their flashing lights and music’ she also believes that it is ‘the game that these machines get you to play to get young people addicted’. She also said that ‘many young people can gamble responsibly with normal betting in shops, however cannot enter a betting shop because these machines are in the premises’. Many young people are addicted to the games on these machines and now these games are becoming more and more available on portable devices such as phones and tablets.
With the commercialisation of these machines and gambling in general there is no surprise that young people are getting addicted to these machines. Even popular TV is now including the subject of gambling addiction such as the current storyline in Stella, which sees Stella’s son Luke struggling with an addiction to these types of games on his phone.

Salimah says after talking to many of her clients that ‘many young people get addicted to the almost wins just as much as the wins themselves’. Therefore many young people continue to put money into these machines in order to try and get the win that they have just almost had. However as we have already seen the loss of money on these machines is by far a great loss of money. In 2012 there was 66 of these machines available to gamblers across Swansea however this figure has more than likely increased with the increase of licenses being awarded to new betting shops.

Theses machines are very popular within the gambling community after visiting a few gambling shops myself, I have seen just how popular these machines are. On a visit to a betting shop at 9 in the morning there were customers already in the betting shops using these machines as soon as these shops are open and on more recent visits these machines have been in use. Casey a betting shop assistant told me that ‘many young people that enter the shop mostly use these machines.’
